ZP Opens a New Office in Queens!

Laurelton, New York- On August 28th, 2017, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, the largest private radiology practice on Long Island, opened its first location in Queens.  The office is located at 231-35 Merrick Boulevard in Laurelton, just three blocks west of the Belt Parkway.  This brand new facility marks the first time the Long Island based company has ventured outside of Nassau and Suffolk counties and into the New York City borough of Queens.  The western movement signals further growth and expansion into the five boroughs to offer City residents the best radiological care available.  The Laurelton office offers 3T MRI, 1.5T MRI, CT, Ultrasound, X-ray, 3D Mammography and Bone Density (DEXA) scans.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology prides itself on being a patient-centric practice.  Offices are open evenings and weekends to accommodate working patients.  They employ over 60 subspecialty-trained radiologists who only read studies within their field of expertise.  “This leads to more accurate results,” said Dr. Steven L. Mendelsohn, Chief Executive Officer.  The reports and images from exams performed at any Zwanger-Pesiri facility are posted on the Patient Portal for the patient to access at his or her convenience.  Patients can then securely fax or email their information to additional physicians with just a few clicks.

“We are proud and excited to have opened our first office in Queens. We are constantly striving to make the best imaging easily accessible and our Laurelton office will enable us to serve a new community.  The people of Queens deserve quality care and we are eager to provide that care,” said Dr. Mendelsohn.

"No Evidence that CT scans, X-rays cause Cancer"

Researchers conclude there is no proof that low-level radiation from medical imaging - such as X-ray and computed tomography scans - causes cancer. They say it is time to throw out an unproven, decades-old theoretical model that has led many people - doctors and regulators included - to believe otherwise.

Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology, the researchers describe how the linear no-threshold model (LNT) - first proposed over 70 years ago - is used to estimate cancer risks from low-dose radiation, such as medical imaging.

But - say James Welsh, a radiation oncology professor in the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, Chicago, IL, and colleagues - risk estimates based on the LNT model are only theoretical, and, as yet, "have never been conclusively demonstrated by empirical evidence."

They say persistent use of the LNT model by regulators and advisory bodies leads to unfounded fears and money being wasted on unnecessary safety measures.
As a result, many doctors are averse to recommending and using the most appropriate imaging procedures for their patients, and many patients are unnecessarily scared to undergo them.

Healthy Living: Bone Health

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology was featured on Fios1's Push Pause demonstrating the importance of a screening bone density exam (DEXA).  The piece, which featured ZP radiologist Ajay Kamireddi, MD and technologist Amanda Aiello, showed that getting a screening DEXA, can highlight low bone density before the patient suffers any symptoms.

If a patient knows what they are up against, they can take the appropriate steps towards a healthier lifestyle.  As Barbara Andrus points out in the piece, people are living longer and screening exams, such as a DEXAs, ensure that these long lives will be a healthy ones.

Need Diagnostic Imaging? Make Sure You Shop Around First!

People will shop around for almost everything they purchase, such as flights, groceries, and furniture.  Price shopping should also be extended to diagnostic imaging, but many people do not even know that they have options.  It is important that patients know that they can go to their preferred radiology facility for a diagnostic imaging exam, even if their doctor recommends going to a hospital-owned facility.

In a recent study performed by healthcare data company Amino, it was discovered that hospitals in every state charge more for an MRI exam than independent facilities.  This is partially due to the facility fees and double co-pays charged by hospitals.  Amino believes freestanding facilities are able to keep their costs down thanks to smaller staffs, more regular business hours, and specialized services.  The price of studies, such as an MRI exam, can vary by thousands of dollars between a hospital and a stand-alone facility.  In nonemergency situations, an independent imaging center is often the most affordable option.

Unfortunately, many stand-alone facilities are not able to survive in the current healthcare climate.  This is largely due to the low reimbursements they receive from the insurance companies.  They often receive less reimbursement than a hospital does for performing the same study; and sometimes the amount that the independent facility gets back is even less than what it costs them to perform the exam.  In turn, this pushes smaller providers out of the market and the control of pricing goes to the hospitals.

When it comes to diagnostic exams, it is important to remember that quality and price are not necessarily correlated.  At Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, the most advanced technology and the most specialized reads are offered in a comfortable and welcoming environment at the lowest prices to patients.  At Zwanger-Pesiri, scans are performed at the lowest cost against a patient’s deductible and there are no facility fees, double co-pays, or parking fees.  Additionally, the 22 convenient locations are open seven days a week and evenings to ensure that patients are accommodated around their personal schedules.  These features have made Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology the most popular choice for radiology exams on Long Island.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence. The DICOE program represents the pinnacle of medical imaging care and is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care.
