New Huntington Office Now Open!

On December 2, 2016, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, the largest private radiology practice on Long Island, opened its newest location in Huntington, New York.  The new office is located at 326 Walt Whitman Road in Huntington, immediately south of the Walt Whitman Mall and one mile north of the Northern State Parkway.  This is Zwanger-Pesiri’s fourteenth office in Suffolk County and their twenty-second overall.  This office brings the latest diagnostic technology, including 3T MRI, CT, Ultrasound, X-ray, 3D Mammography and Bone Density (DEXA) scans to the town which is well known for being Walt Whitman’s birthplace. Whitman is among the most influential American poets and is often credited as being the father of free verse.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is a patient-centric practice and has become well known for their fast turnaround time of results.  They employ over 50 subspecialty-trained radiologists who only read studies within their field of expertise.  According to Dr. Steven L. Mendelsohn, Chief Executive Officer, this leads to 80% of the studies being read within one hour.  The reports and images from exams performed at any Zwanger-Pesiri facility are posted on the Patient Portal for the patient to access at his or her convenience.  Patients can then securely fax or email their information to additional physicians with just a few clicks.

“We are proud and delighted to be opening an office with such a convenient location for many people.  We are always striving to make the best imaging easily accessible because we understand how important time is to our patients.  Our 3T MRI system is considered the best imaging tool available and allows for MRI scans to be completed in less than ten minutes,” said Dr. Mendelsohn.  “It is always exciting to open a new office and offer the best services to a new community.”

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

In October 2015, a new era in women’s healthcare began in the United States.  The American Cancer Society released new guidelines, recommending that women receive annual screening mammograms between the ages of 45 and 55, and then every other year after the age of 55.

This differs from their original criteria, which stated that women should get annual mammograms starting at the age of 40.  The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging agree with the original standards, and argue that the new guidelines contradict the research that has regularly appeared in medical journals.  That is, early detection is the best prevention against breast cancer.  Is breast cancer detection continually being undermined by the insurance companies to increase their bottom line, at the expense of early detection?  Are women’s medical rights continually being eroded by the government and insurance companies?

Ninety percent of breast cancer survivors, as reported in the medical journals, have survived due to early detection.  With new technology, such as 3D mammography and full breast ultrasound, continuously proving to increase early detection and to save lives, we at Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology strongly agree with the American College of Radiology and will continue to recommend that women receive annual mammograms beginning at age 40.

Early Detection is the Best Protection!

Mammograms: Early Detection is the Best Protection!
3D Mammography with C-View™ is available at all Zwanger-Pesiri breast imaging centers on Long Island.

It is estimated that by the end of 2016, there will be over 246,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women across the United States.  One of the most important things that a woman can do to protect herself and ensure early detection is to schedule a yearly mammogram.  Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, along with The American College of Radiology (ACR), The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), recommends that women start receiving these exams at age 40.  It is believed that if women who are currently in their thirties follow these recommendations, up to 100,000 lives could be saved.

While any annual mammogram increases the likelihood of catching suspicious growths early, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology encourages every woman to receive a 3D mammogram (also known as a breast tomosynthesis scan).  This exam is essentially the same as a conventional 2D mammogram, but can detect breast cancer 15 months earlier.  3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis) has also been found to detect up to 41% more invasive breast cancers.  The benefits of 3D mammography are available to patients at no additional radiation exposure thanks to new software.

Hologic C-View™ software provides the 3D mammography exam with up to 40% less radiation than a traditional combination view, which uses both 2D and 3D images to form an accurate diagnosis.  To do this, C-View™ takes the images from a 3D mammogram and instantly renders them into 2D versions.  This provides the radiologist with two sets of images from one exam.  The amount of radiation that a patient is exposed to during a 3D mammogram with C-View™ software is equivalent to a standard 2D mammogram alone. 3D Mammography with C-View™ is available at all Zwanger-Pesiri breast imaging centers on Long Island.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is a Diagnostic Center of Imaging Excellence. The DICOE program represents the pinnacle of medical imaging care and is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize the highest-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care.

Freeport Office is Now Open!

On June 3rd,  2016, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology opened its newest location at 375 Sunrise Highway in Freeport, just half of a mile east of the Baldwin train station.  This is Zwanger-Pesiri’s eighth office in Nassau county and their 21st office overall.  Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology provides the most advanced technology to its patients, and this office will be the first radiology facility in Nassau to feature a high-field strength, OPEN-SIDED MRI machine.  Zwanger-Pesiri was the first to introduce this unit to patients when they opened their Smithtown West location in November, and then again when their Coram office opened in February.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology prides itself on being a patient-centric practice and an Open-Sided MRI unit will accommodate patients who are not comfortable being imaged on a conventional MRI machine.  Zwanger-Pesiri is unwilling to compromise quality for comfort and believes that the Hitachi Oasis 1.2T MRI scanner is the first machine available with the ability to provide excellent images with superior comfort.

This machine is meant to create a relaxing environment for patients who cannot comfortably receive a standard MRI exam due to their size, age, or fear of tight spaces.  The Open-Sided MRI unit offers the patient an unobstructed view for almost every exam it performs, while still allowing for high quality images.  This new Open-Sided MRI scanner joins Zwanger-Pesiri’s fleet of twenty-one 3T MRI units.  The 3T MRI system has long been regarded as the best medical imaging device available, and is offered at the nearby Merrick and Lynbrook offices.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the only radiology facility on Long Island to offer both the 3T MRI, which provides a comfortable experience while providing the highest quality images, and the Oasis 1.2T MRI, which delivers high quality images in the most comfortable MRI environment yet.  The Freeport office also offers 3D Mammography, Low-Dose 64-Slice CT, Digital X-ray, DXA Bone Densitometry, and Ultrasound.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology Named a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology Designated as ACR
Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence

We are proud and honored to announce that on May 12, 2016, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology locations across Long Island were designated Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence™ (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The DICOE program represents the pinnacle of medical imaging care and is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize the highest-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care. To attain this distinction a comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging enterprise, including structure and outcomes, must be performed. The DICOE designation recognizes excellence at multiple levels — including the professional staff, the technology and the policies and procedures the organization follows — and superior patient care.  All of which are qualities that Zwanger-Pesiri has been focused on since the practice’s establishment in 1958.

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the Dose Index Registry® and General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as Image Wisely® and Image Gently®.

The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians.

ZP at Bellmore JFK's Career Day

Students at the ZP table
On March 30th, staff members from Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology presented at John F. Kennedy High School’s Healthcare Career Day.  Different fields of medicine from acupuncturists to EMTs were also present to teach the students that there are many more options in healthcare other than being a doctor, nurse or working in a hospital.  Because many of them had been to our offices in the past, there was a constant crowd at the ZP table.  The students asked our team about the pros and cons of working in radiology as well as the necessary education.  Thanks to the Zwanger-Pesiri representatives who piqued the students’ interest and answered their questions.

MS Awareness Week

We know that MS affects each person and family differently. It can be unpredictable and isolating. In honor of MS Awareness week, we are sharing diverse and powerful solutions that defy MS.

Together we will change the world — together we are stronger than MS.

  • Here are a few of the ways people are overcoming the challenges of living with MS:
  • A woman in Orlando builds an innovative mechanism that allows her husband, who relies on his power chair for mobility, to stand tall and proud on his own for a few hours each day.
  • A single mother of five coaches football because it’s rewarding and funny, and reminds her of the team that it takes to face the challenges of MS.
  • A woman with progressive MS manages fatigue by swimming nearly every day to revive body, mind and spirit.
  • A sculptor who can no longer stand independently uses a weight belt strapped to each side of his sculpting table to keep him upright while crafting beautiful marble creations.

Find these and other innovative solutions, and add your own, here

We also hope to see you at the MS Walk on May 21st at Jones Beach, where Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology will be supporting all participants.

ZP Loves Hearts!

In honor of February, we at Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology want to remind you of the services we can provide you and your cardiac health.

CT Calcium Scoring
Performed in Lynbrook, Merrick, Lindenhurst, West Islip, Plainview and Stony Brook
Calcium scoring is a noninvasive way to view your coronary arteries and help identify the location and extent of calcified plaque
A buildup of plaque may indicate coronary artery disease (CAD) which can narrow arteries, reduce blood flow to the heart, and lead to an increased risk for heart attack
The scan is designed for undiagnosed people and can show whether you're at risk before symptoms occur

Echocardiograms
Performed in Massapequa, Medford and Smithtown East
A non-invasive and painless sonogram of the heart which exposes the patient to no radiation
Zwanger-Pesiri is ICAEL Accredited for Echocardiography
Identifies cardiac tumors, masses and endocarditis, as well as wall thickness, congenital defects and heart anatomy

Nuclear Stress Test
Performed in Massapequa
Measures blood flow to the heart muscle and evaluates heart function during rest and exercise
Determines the need for coronary CTA or cardiac catheterization
Identifies blocked coronary arteries and evaluates efficacy of prior coronary bypass grafts and angioplasty

Cardiac MRI
Performed in East Setauket
A non-invasive exam that does not expose you to any radiation
A cardiac MRI is used to evaluate the anatomy and function of the heart, valves and major blood vessels, as well as the surrounding structures and the effects of coronary artery disease
A cardiac MRI is also used when the results from a nuclear stress test or echocardiogram are unclear

Coronary CT Angiography
Performed in Lynbrook, Plainview, Smithtown East, Stony Brook and West Islip
Creates complete images of blood vessels in heart, as well as other body parts such as the lungs, kidneys, arms and legs
Detects narrowed coronary arteries which increase the risk of heart attack
Low radiation, no incision, no catheterization and extremely short scan times
Recommended for symptomatic patients with unclear nuclear stress test results, and patients with a family history cardiovascular disease

Open-Sided MRI now Available!

On November 2, 2015, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology acquired Suffolk MRI’s office, located at 987 West Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown, New York, making this Zwanger-Pesiri’s second location in Smithtown and their 19thoffice overall.  Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology provides the most advanced technology to its patients, and this office will be the first radiology facility on Long Island to feature a high field strength, OPEN SIDED MRImachine.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology prides itself on being a patient-centric practice and an open sided MRI unit will accommodate patients who are not comfortable being imaged on a conventional machine.  Zwanger-Pesiri is unwilling to compromise quality for comfort and believes that the Hitachi Oasis 1.2 Tesla MRI scanner is the first machine available with the ability to provide excellent images with superior comfort.

This machine is meant to create a relaxing environment for patients who cannot comfortably receive a standard MRI exam due to their size, age, or fear of tight spaces.  The open sided MRI unit offers the patient an unobstructed view for almost every exam it performs, while still allowing for high quality images.  This new open sided MRI scanner joins Zwanger-Pesiri’s fleet of nineteen 3T MRI units.  The 3T MRI system has long been regarded as the best medical imaging device available, as they provide incomparable images, short exam times, and are large enough to accommodate patients weighing up to 550 pounds.

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the only radiology facility on Long Island to offer both the 3T MRI, which provides a comfortable experience while providing the highest quality images, and the Oasis 1.2T MRI, which delivers high quality images in the most comfortable MRI environment yet.
