Mammograms: Early Detection is the
Best Protection!
3D Mammography with
C-View™ is available at all Zwanger-Pesiri breast imaging centers on Long
Island.
It is estimated that by the end of
2016, there will be over 246,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed
in women across the United States. One
of the most important things that a woman can do to protect herself and ensure
early detection is to schedule a yearly mammogram. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, along with The
American College of Radiology (ACR), The American Congress of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (ACOG), and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), recommends that women start receiving these exams at age
40. It is believed that if women who are
currently in their thirties follow these recommendations, up to 100,000 lives could
be saved.
While any annual mammogram increases
the likelihood of catching suspicious growths early, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology
encourages every woman to receive a 3D mammogram (also known as a breast
tomosynthesis scan). This exam is
essentially the same as a conventional 2D mammogram, but can detect breast
cancer 15 months earlier. 3D Mammography
(Tomosynthesis) has also been found to detect up to 41% more invasive breast
cancers. The benefits of 3D mammography
are available to patients at no additional radiation exposure thanks to new
software.
Hologic C-View™ software provides the
3D mammography exam with up to 40% less radiation than a traditional
combination view, which uses both 2D and 3D images to form an accurate
diagnosis. To do this, C-View™ takes the
images from a 3D mammogram and instantly renders them into 2D versions. This provides the radiologist with two sets
of images from one exam. The amount of
radiation that a patient is exposed to during a 3D mammogram with C-View™
software is equivalent to a standard 2D mammogram alone. 3D Mammography with
C-View™ is available at all Zwanger-Pesiri breast imaging centers on Long
Island.
